In 1900, the Fußacher Durchstich was completed after five years of construction. The Rhine Valley inland canal, which was newly built between 1896 and 1906, was channeled into the old river arm near Höchst (Vorarlberg)/St. Margrethen. This created the Old Rhine, which carries the meteoric water from the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and parts of the Appenzell region into Lake Constance. It flows into Lake Constance near the town of Altenrhein.
