There are now two monuments on the dike in Westernieland. One for the reclamation of the Linthorst Homanpolder. “Dei nait wil diek'n mout wiek'n,” it says. The second monument is in memory of fourteen people, including thirteen from the Ranum bus disaster. In the misty morning of October 16, 1940, a bus full of workers fell under the train. The fourteenth worker was killed when he came under the locomotive that was transporting the dug up soil. According to the Nieuwsblad van het Noord, thousands of interested parties had arrived to make the funeral an impressive ceremony. The graves of twelve victims can still be found at the Zuidergraafplaats in Groningen. Driver Havers was buried in his hometown of Zwolle.
