View of the Stintmarkt - a place full of history, enjoyment and lots of charm!
In the past, the small, salmon-like fish called "smelt" used to roam here, swimming across the Elbe to the Ilmenau at the end of February to spawn in the sandy riverbed. The Lüneburg fishermen caught the smelt in large quantities and traded them right here, at what is now the Stintmarkt. Opposite, in the old department store, the fresh catch was sold, and the old crane, which still stands at the Stint today, helped to load the salt from the Lüneburg saltworks onto ships - a small piece of maritime history in the middle of the city!

One of the busiest bridges in Lüneburg ... meeting point, tourist magnet etc. Right on the Stint - life is in full swing here ;-)
