The Community Baboon Sanctuary is a protected area in Belize. It was established in 1985 to address threats to the black howler monkey from agriculture, logging and hunting, and to educate locals and visitors about the importance of biodiversity and sustainability and to promote economic development in the Bermudian Landing community.
On February 23, 1985, the Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) was founded by Dr. Robert Horwich, an American primatologist, and Klappe Young, a landowner in the Bermudian Landing community. Originally founded with twelve other landowners, by 2013 over 200 properties were already involved. In 1998 the Women's Conservation Group was founded with women from the 7 villages in the Belize River Valle and has been led by Jessy Young since 1998. In 2017, the group was awarded the United Nations Equator Prize for its efforts to "improve local livelihoods while protecting endangered wildlife populations."
