The fountain of the 99 spouts (also known as the Rivera fountain) is one of the symbols of L'Aquila. It is so called because it is made up of 93 stone masks and 6 individual spouts. Tradition has it that these represent the 99 castles in the surrounding area which, in the 13th century, participated in the foundation of L'Aquila.
