Merken became an independent parish only in the French period in 1804. Before that, Merken was a branch of the parish of St. Mary Immaculate Conception, Pier. The previous Pierer branch in Vilvenich with the Helena chapel was also re-parished to Merken. However, this was reversed in 1805 at the request of the Vilvenich family, which means that Vilvenich once again belonged to the Pier parish. Since 1687 the community had a vicar who was subordinate to the Pierer pastor.

Road cycling

There was a chapel mentioned in Merken as early as 922 and 1308. Over the centuries, for example, new buildings were caused by arson. Different architectural styles also changed. A part of the church that had become dilapidated was demolished in 1960 and replaced with the current one in 1966 - 1968.
