      Old Wöhle ammunition depot:

The former British Wöhle ammunition depot is located east of Hildesheim in a forest near the village of Wöhle (Schellerten municipality).

It was built at the end of the 1970s and served as a munitions store for the British troops stationed in Hildesheim. From the end of World War II to October 1993, Hildesheim was a British garrison with up to 1,300 soldiers and their families. The following associations were last stationed in Hildesheim:

1st Royal Tank Regiment (1 RTR)

1st Regiment Army Air Corps (1st RGT AAC).

The main weapon system of the tank battalion was the MBT (= Main Battle Tank) Chieftain.

The helicopter regiment was equipped with anti-tank helicopters of the Lynx and Gazelle types.

As usual in many depots, the depot in Wöhle was secured by civilian guards and dogs.

With the withdrawal of the last British soldiers in October 1993, the depot was also given up. Since then, the property has been empty, unfortunately all buildings except for the ammunition warehouses have been badly destroyed by vandals, there are broken windows and even demolished garage doors and graffiti. In the meantime, the federal government has sold the property to a private investor. It remains to be seen what will happen to the former depot in the future. The property is not accessible, unauthorized entry is prohibited!

        Ammunition store:

In the forest between Ottbergen and Wöhle are the remains of an ammunition dump of the British Army on the Rhine.
