A quarry is used to extract solid rock from a rock deposit. In the case of loose rock, however, one speaks of sand or gravel opencast mining or gravel pit. Mining can be carried out in depth and width or, on slopes, horizontally. The majority are surface quarries, also known as open quarries. In special cases, the rock is mined in underground quarries. Many quarries serve to extract bulk raw materials for transport route construction and as suppliers of aggregates for the processing industry. In terms of quantity, quarries for stone (flat formatted workpieces) come far later.
