After a difficult construction extending over a period of 2 years and 4 months, Horikawa canal was constructed by order of the fifth Obi feudal lord, Sukezane
    • Ito, in 1686.
From the late Meiji to the early Showa Period, many of stonework dikes of both sides of Horikawa canal were built according to owner of the land with the permission. of the prefecture in order to reinforce stonework river dike which became the timber basin (Benkou-zai). After the war, due to advances in reinforcement work, many of the stonework river dikes disappeared because they were covered with concrete.
Later, in 1975, the plan to fill the canal was decided, but citizens carried out a canal presentation movement in 1988, leading to a review of the land reclamation plan.
Since 1993, due to the efforts of Miyazaki Prefecture, the Horikawa Canal presentation preparation progressed, resulting in the removal of the concrete that covered the stonework river dike, and the revival of the traditionally constructed stonework river dike.
