The Horikawa Bridge is a single-arched stone bridge that was constructed by Obi stone mason, Bunkichi Ishii in 1903. The bridge connects the two parts of Aburatsu that were divided by the construction of the Horikawa Canal.
The Aburatsu Wooden Bridge stood until the middle of the Meiji Period.
However, in accordance with the wishes of the Aburatsu townspeople for a permanent structure, a stone bridge was constructed in its place over the course of about four years.
In order to enable boats to navigate under the bridge, it was necessary to make the bridge's arch higher, so roads on both sides of the bridge were raised some three meters. As a result, the view around the Horikawa Bridge is quite characteristic with houses around the area that have their second floor at ground level.
