Equipment of the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption
As a classicist building, the church impresses with its clear lines and structures and has a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross. In the chancel, at the front of the apse, there is the historic altar made of Italian marble, donated by Duchess Julie. Above it you can see the copy of the portrait of the "Madonna di Foligno" by Raphael, a gift from Pope Leo XII. The liturgical places in the chancel, altar and ambo, and the inlaid floor are made of Löbejün quartz porphyry, designed by the Aachen artist Thomas Torkler. The pews and pulpit also date from the time it was built.
In the north aisle there is a crucifixion group with medieval figures, in the south aisle there is a replica of the Pietá (Mater dolorosa) from the Basilica of San Prassede in Rome. The church's furnishings also include a picture of "Mary with the Child" (by Raphael) and the painting of the "Sorrowful Mother" by Christophoro Roncalli from the 17th century, once an altarpiece in the chapel of the Brothers of Mercy at the hospital on Wallstrasse. Worth mentioning is the organ from the Paderborn organ building company Anton Feith from 1933.
After a renovation of the belfry and an addition to the bells, St. Maria has had 6 bells since September 2009, the oldest of which dates from 1829 and was cast by Gustav Becker in Halle. The actual three-piece bell dates from 1966 and was cast in Apolda. It was completed in 2009 with two large bells from the Lauchhammer foundry.
Since 2015, the church has housed two thermal bath windows designed by the Leipzig painter Michael Triegel.

History of the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption
The Catholic castle and parish church of St. Mary of the Assumption was built from 1827 to 1832 by Gottfried Bandhauer, an important representative of classicism. The construction was commissioned by Duke Ferdinand of Anhalt-Köthen after he and his wife Duchess Julie converted to Catholicism in 1825. During construction work in 1830, the tower scaffolding collapsed. The architect was then dismissed from the Duke's service and, after the Duke's death, he refrained from building the tower. The construction was completed by the master builder Christian Konrad Hengst. As Gottfried Bandhauer's main work, the Church of St. Maria is one of the most important sacral buildings of classicism in Germany. The church was built as a castle and parish church and as a burial place for the ducal couple, whose bones also rest in the crypt.
In the parish of "St. Maria, Köthen", which was newly built on May 2, 2010, the castle and parish church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt is the main church.
