    Location and shape

Northeast of the town church of St. Jakob is the town hall of Köthen on the north side of the market on the corner of Springstrasse. Thanks to the successful corner development, its two main wings extend along Marktstrasse and Ritterstrasse, whereas only a gable front faces Springstrasse. This west side is particularly emphasized by the 48 meter high main tower on the southeast corner and a tower bay on the northwest corner of the building. The building has numerous details, ranging from bay windows to balconies, tail gables, the observation deck on the main tower and reliefs to arcaded basement windows. There are also dormers, gargoyles, portals, columns, clocks, cross arms and the tower roof turret.

      Story

Köthen developed into a city at the beginning of the 14th century and benefited from its central location between Magdeburg, Halle (Saale) and Leipzig, whose trade routes met here.[1] The old town hall from 1437 remained untouched for centuries. At the beginning of the 17th century it was already considered dilapidated. In the years 1638 and 1639, in the middle of the Thirty Years' War, a new building was built. In 1708 a portal was added. The building was then gradually rebuilt.[2] Since there was no longer enough space, the neighboring house at Marktstrasse No. 2 was bought in 1876. A photo from 1898 shows an eight-axis building with various weather vanes and two dormer windows. In the middle a staircase led down into the Ratskeller and around this entrance a double staircase led into the actual town hall. The entrance with its baroque portal, which was flanked by columns and crowned with an openwork roof and a coat of arms, had a significant impact on the otherwise rather simple building.[3]

Nothing remains of this enlarged town hall because it was torn down - after it was considered dilapidated and too small despite further repairs in 1876 - for the new building, which was built between 1896 and 1900. The Berlin architectural firm of Heinrich Reinhardt & Georg Süßenguth, who also designed the town halls in Dessau, Berlin-Charlottenburg and Wuppertal-Elberfeld, was responsible for this new building in the style of the German Renaissance. In order to have enough space for the new building, Marktstrasse No. 3 was also purchased in 1894. In 1896, the demolition of the former Fürstenheim house began and today's meeting room wing was built in the east of the area. In 1898 the Ratskeller and town hall were demolished. The western part was then rebuilt and the north wing was added. The town hall was inaugurated on October 29, 1900. The Jewish citizen Felix Friedheim contributed considerable money to the new building, making large donations on the occasion of his business anniversary and also having been an honorary citizen since 1895 due to other charitable foundations. In 2011, an elevator was added for disabled use.[3]
