Hiking

The reservoir is mainly used for drinking water supply and provides water for over 400,000 inhabitants in Central Thuringia. The storage volume is around 18 million m³. The dam has retained a natural character. In the course of the dam's construction, 20 residential buildings, a sawmill, and the former blacksmith's shop of the Schwarzwald district were demolished, and the road to Oberhof was relocated. The excursion restaurant “Untere Schweizerhütte” had to close due to its location in the dam's water catchment area; it was also demolished.
