The name Oktogon refers to the octagonal shape of the square, which was created by the buildings designed by Antal Szkalnitzky in the early 1870s. In 1936 it was renamed Mussolini tér ("Mussolini Square") and in 1945 November 7. tér ("7 November Square"), before being given back its original name in 1990.
