Rastenberg Castle was built from 1193 onwards. The builder was likely Hugo von Rastenberg. The forework east of the medieval castle, dating from the 13th century, was converted for residential purposes in the 16th century.
The castle is owned by the Thurn-Valsassina family and is inhabited year-round.
To the east of the castle lies the late Baroque Meierhof, which today houses offices and guest rooms for the seminar business "Die Lichtung". The Baroque outer bailey within the castle grounds is rented out to holiday guests.
