The gate was set up with a perfect axial view of the castle!
The paved square and the planted surroundings successfully place the gate at the center of the entire ensemble.
New paths lead from the sidewalk on Rheiner Str. directly to the gate.
It's simply admirable what hobby and professional stonemasons have created here.
The gate was inaugurated on October 7, 2023.***This gate here in Bad Bentheim is a modern interpretation of the original. This is in Geraldton (Australia). In October 1628, the ship Batavia leaves the port in Texel, carrying sandstone for a portal to the Batavia fortress. However, the ship ran aground on a reef on the coast of Western Australia in June 1629.In 1963 Australian marine archaeologists found the wreck. In the 1970s, the ship and cargo were salvaged and the “kit” of the portal was assembled. Geological investigations show that it is Bentheim sandstone.Details can be found here:

A beautiful photo opportunity. You can see the castle through the portal. The Batavia was rebuilt in Lelystad. The Batavia portal was made of Bentheim sandstone.
