On the way up you come across the ancient remains of the Pidurangala Temple. The most impressive sight is a 12m long sleeping Buddha that occupies a high place beneath the rock face. Parts of the original structure remained intact while the rest was reconstructed with bricks, including the head, which was removed by treasure hunters. From here it's only 10 minutes to the highest point of the rock.
