The original sundial was installed in the Dejima garden by Herman Christian Kastens, who served as chief factor from 1766 to 1767. The sundial tells the time from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the shadow cast by the sun. The line running north to south is noon. The modern Japan Standard Time Meridian passes through the city of Akashi (Hyogo Prefecture) at 135° east longitude.
Since Nagasaki is located to the west of Akashi, the time indicated by the sundial is later than the actual time.
