The Lüneburg Central Cemetery has existed since 1876. It covers an area of 12.9 hectares and is located on Soltauer Straße in the Mittelfeld district of Lüneburg. The cemetery contains 15,000 gravestones. After the forest cemetery in the Kaltenmoor district, it is the second largest cemetery in the city of Lüneburg with an area of 24.1 hectares and 20,000 gravestones.

When there was no longer enough space in the Gertrudenfriedhof and the St. Antonifriedhof, towards the end of the 19th century, after long negotiations, a large collective cemetery was created on Soltauer Strasse, which was subordinate to the St. Johanniskirche for decades. The first burial took place there in 1876. The neo-Gothic cemetery chapel was inaugurated in 1883. The cemetery was expanded between 1907 and 1933.

In April 1966, the central cemetery was taken over by the city of Lüneburg, but it was not opened for further burials until 1983. Six war cemeteries were created throughout the complex, including one for victims of the Hamburg firestorm of 1943. An annual memorial service on Remembrance Day takes place on Ehrenhain III under the direction of the VDK.
