The Glotter rises in the Middle Black Forest in the northeast corner of the municipality of St. Peter on the southern slope of the eastward ridge that connects the 1241 m high Kandel via the Hochkopf and the Plattenhöhe with the Hornkopf, on the southwest slope of the Plattenhöhe. Initially it flows southwest towards Sankt Peter and then - without flowing through the town itself - turns west-northwest through the Breisgau, through the Glottertal.

Here it gurgles fresh and cool through Glottertal.

The Glotter, also called Glotterbach, is a right tributary of the lower Dreisam, about 37 kilometers long, originating in the Black Forest, shortly before its own confluence with the Elz near Riegel am Kaiserstuhl on the eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Plain. It flows mostly in a west-northwest direction in the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and then Emmendingen in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg.
