The financial genius Anton Grassalkovics I was a lawyer, economic expert and loyal subject of Empress Maria Theresa, who made a significant contribution to reducing the national debt of the Habsburg Monarchy. His son, Anton Grassalkovics II, used his father's financial cushion to build today's palace.

Joseph von Egger had his garden, acquired in 1769 (which according to today's topography stretched from Obere Donaustraße to Obere Augartenstraße and laterally from Haasgasse to Nestroygasse), divided into 20 plots, which he partly sold and partly auctioned off between 1777 and 1784. In 1780, the bourgeois innkeeper Johann Georg Mayer acquired one of these plots. By 1783, a dwelling with a garden already stood here.
