    Historical location:

In 1505, the Flemish Count Philip the Fair gave permission to found a closed city on the south bank of the Braakman. About 80 years later, there was probably still little more than a hamlet on this site, but that hamlet did form the basis of the Philippine fortress.

When Alexander Farnese, the later Duke of Parma, entered North Flanders in 1583 to regain this region for the Spanish king, he decided to build a fortification at this location on the Braakman: the St. Philip fortress. The fortress was located in a strategically important location: on deep waters (and therefore a potential landing site for enemy troops) and opposite the Land of Axel, conquered by the States, right in front of him.

Sint-Philip was a small, probably triangular redoubt with bastions. The occupation was small, so Prince Maurits had no trouble whatsoever when he landed here in 1600 with an immense army on his way to Dunkirk to chase away the privateers, which culminated in the Battle of Nieuwpoort. After that battle, the States left the area and destroyed the redoubt. The Spaniards returned and rebuilt the fortress into a square structure with a bastion on each corner.
