A level stone is a stone that was erected between 1838 and 1842 within the borders of the Bavarian Palatinate. At the time, it was used for trigonometric height measurements. Level stones are made of sandstone. They usually have a square cross-section with an edge length of 1 foot and a height of 7 feet (3 feet in the ground and 4 feet above). 1 foot = 29.1859 cm. and bear an inscription with an underlined triangle and the year 1838 or 1839. There are, however, deviations; some stones do not have a square cross-section and not all of them have the inscription with an (underlined) triangle and the year 1838 or 1839. Most level stones can be found in the Palatinate Forest, often on mountain peaks, hills or elevations.
