Here, near the Chapel of Our Lady in Trouble and the "Iilandjes" with the former and now dilapidated center of the "Association for Ecology and Nature Conservation", you can start a walk through the De Warande nature reserve, which is managed by Natuur & Bos. You will find meadows, ponds, and fairly recent plantings of deciduous trees. However, you will also find drainage meadows and functional or non-functioning remains of the smart irrigation system that was often used in these parts. And that is also fascinating for those who want to know the history of agriculture and certainly for those who like some unusual flora. This irrigation used to be done by sending calcareous Meuse water from the Kempen canal to the Warande. I partly followed the walk "De Watering" during my walk. You can also still find this in nearby areas and not so far from Hamont-Achel, there is even a fully functioning system, restored in collaboration with Natuurpunt. Just look at this walk to "De Grote Watering" with its beautiful canals: komoot.com/nl-nl/tour/1254513972 Here too, some work has been done and you can find various types of plants which are otherwise completely foreign to the Kempen. And for enthusiasts there is also a bivouac zone in De Warande. You can read more about the hiking trails, fascinating flora and equally fascinating history of De Warande at natuurenbos.be/natuurgebied/warande. At the beginning of the path, also look at the unfortunately very dilapidated old information board about "het ingenious system of a watering" that explains everything and how a network of ditches and the Warmbeek between 1894 and 1914 brought all that calcareous Meuse water here and spread it over the drainage meadows.
