The parish church of Achel is fully called St. Monulphus and Gondulphus Church. Much of the building is quite recent. However, there was already a mention of a church on this site in 1139. As you can read in the highlight about the former Catharinadal monastery (see "Catharinadal cheese factory"), a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua was also venerated here. Already before 1139 a Romanesque church that formed the basis of the choir of the later Gothic church that was built on the foundations of that Romanesque church. That Gothic church was built around 1450-1460, probably with the reuse of existing materials. In 1670 it was The church was embellished, but a tower was not built, as the resources were lacking. The tower was built in 1753-1758, for which a wooden bell tower was used next to the church. In the eighteenth century, restorations and an organ were carried out again. After the French had the church closed, it was briefly used as a horse stable and barely a few decades later there was another lightning strike on the tower, which required further repairs and a little later the floor was also raised and the sacristy replaced. In 1905-1911 the tower was demolished, the nave was lengthened and the side aisles were widened. Even after that there was a lot of repair and innovation, for example after damage caused by the crash of an Allied bomber in 1943. There are also some interesting pieces in the church, but certainly also outside the church, such as the tombstone with representations of the deceased in 1526. Henrick van Grevenbrouck and his wife Everardina Surlet de Chokier, to name just one. You can see that - and more - in the photos. There is also a grave monument of the Simons family of the Simonshuis in memory of everyone who was buried in and around the church over the centuries.
