The building was built in 1911 as “Wagner's Lodging House” by the Kirchhofen landowner Johannes Wagner. The reason for this was the marriage of his son, Otto Wagner, to a penniless maid from his estate. He financed the construction of the building through the sale of his Spreenhagen gravel pit and the inexpensive purchase of Berlin demolition stones, which were delivered on the Spree in barges.
The young Wagners also ran a ferry on the Spree. This was used primarily by Braunsdorf and Markgrafpiesker businesses and, until the end of the Second World War, by citizens on their way to Hangelsberg train station and the Herzfelde brickworks.
After the war, the forest castle in Hangelsberg became a home for refugees. Some of them found a new home locally. Later, a restaurant (the later KONSUM restaurant "Waldschloß") was set up on the ground floor with a view of the square. This was followed by further uses as apartments, grocery store, post office and bistro.
The forest castle was owned by family members until 2006. It then changed hands, who wanted to renovate it purely as a residential property. But now it seems to be empty?
