Santa Llogaia was in the county of Besalú, near the border with Empúries. We think it should be identified with the place called Horto Medio in the will of Count Bernat Tallaferro in 1020. In 1105 the place is called Sanctae Leocadiae. In 1167 Guillem, bishop of Girona, gave the church of Santa Llogaia and its suffragania of the castle of Palol Sabaldòria to the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. In the same year, the possession of the church of Santa Llogaia, together with the town, is confirmed by Pope Alexander III to the monks of Ripoll. From the twelfth century onwards, the name of the Àlguema stream was added to the name of Santa Llogaia. According to a notary from Castelló d'Empúries, the great downpour that the Empordà suffered in October 1421 destroyed the site of Sant Llogaia d'Àlguema. In 1698 it was part of the royal battalion of Figueres.

It is worth clarifying the origin of the modern mispronunciation Algáma of the stream's name, and also that of Mas Àlguem (pronounced Algám), located by the stream, upstream from Santa Llogaia, in the dividing line between Navata and Ordis. This place is mentioned in a document from 914 (uillari Algama). The modern dislocation of the accent is of bookish origin, the result of the custom of not putting graphic accents on capital letters. Afterwards, the "understood" have spread this pronunciation, helped by the restricted use that is made of it (the municipality is usually called Santa Llogaia, without the accompaniment). The proparoxytone pronunciation is ensured by the form documented in 1280 Alguemi.
