From 1941 to 1945, the Nazi authorities and especially the Geheime Staatspolizei (GeStaPo) used the cellars of the Grossmarkthalle as a meeting place for Jews destined for deportation. Nearly 10,000 people were forcibly dragged from here by train to ghettos, concentration camps and extermination camps where they were murdered. The memorial site at the Grossmarkthalle reminds of these events and the significance of the place.

The memorial has a publicly accessible area along the railway embankment (Philipp-Holzmann-Weg). The part of the memorial site located on the grounds of the European Central Bank (ECB) is only accessible through guided tours.

The still new monument for the deportation of the Frankfurt Jews is very impressive. Especially because of its simple, restrained design. The quotations of eyewitnesses engraved in the ground are very impressive.
