Consecrated in 1634, the building was built for Poor Clare nuns and an inscription states that an oratory called Santissima Annunziata was dedicated here. A monastery of the same name that was demolished by the Medici in 1577. The order and community members changed ownership several times. It gets its current name because of the ash-gray color of the community members' clothing. This is how it became known as the “Church of the Bigi”. The church is now used by the city of Grosseto for events.

The building is attached to the Poor Clares Convent, of which it was a place of worship. It overlooks Piazza Baccarini at the entrance to Strada Vinzaglio and partially delimits with its left side the square that opens in front of the nearby Church of San Francesco. Deconsecrated at the beginning of the 20th century, it is used for cultural activities and initiatives.

What is the current function of the Chiesa dei Bigi?

Originally consecrated as an oratory for Clarissan nuns in 1634, the Chiesa dei Bigi is now deconsecrated and serves as a vibrant cultural hub. It houses a section of the Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti and is used by the Comune di Grosseto for various cultural activities and initiatives.

How long should I allocate for a visit to the Chiesa dei Bigi?

While the Chiesa dei Bigi itself is a single-nave structure, a visit to appreciate its architectural features, Baroque altars, and the Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti section typically takes 30 minutes to an hour. If you attend an event or explore the adjacent former convent, your visit may be longer.

Is the Chiesa dei Bigi wheelchair accessible?

As a historic building, accessibility can sometimes be a challenge. While the church is used for cultural events, specific information on wheelchair accessibility for all areas, particularly the former convent, is not readily available. It's recommended to contact the Comune di Grosseto or the Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti directly for the most up-to-date accessibility details before your visit.

What kind of family activities can we find near Chiesa dei Bigi?

The Chiesa dei Bigi itself, with its historical significance and current role as a museum space, can be an educational family activity. What is the historical significance behind the name 'Chiesa dei Bigi'?

The church was originally known as Santa Chiara and before that, likely Santissima Annunziata. It acquired the name 'Chiesa dei Bigi' (Church of the ash-greys) because it was assigned to the Company of the Saints Ludovico and Gherardo in 1796. This confraternity earned the moniker 'Bigi' due to the ash-grey color of their habits.

Are there guided tours available for the Chiesa dei Bigi's history and architecture?

While the intro mentions that visitors may be interested in guided tours, specific details about regularly scheduled guided tours for the Chiesa dei Bigi are not provided. As it's now a cultural venue and part of a museum, it's best to check the official website of the Comune di Grosseto or the Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti for information on guided tours or special historical presentations.

Can you recommend any other churches to visit in the vicinity of Chiesa dei Bigi?

Absolutely! The Chiesa dei Bigi is conveniently located near the Church of San Francesco, which is another significant historical and religious site in Grosseto's city center. Exploring both churches offers a deeper insight into the city's rich architectural and spiritual heritage.

For specific recommendations, it's best to consult travel booking sites or local tourism information.

Are there any 'hidden gems' or lesser-known facts about Chiesa dei Bigi?

This makes them a significant artistic highlight and a unique feature not to be missed by art and history enthusiasts.
