The Atlas squirrel prefers to live in the rocky regions of Fuerteventura. The sandy regions don't like it that much. The cute Atlas squirrel is a star among tourists. It likes to be fed, although this is forbidden. Among the locals it is more of a nuisance.

The Atlas squirrels are native to the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa. Their distribution area extends from Western Sahara and Morocco to Algeria. In this region they are endemic, i.e. they have a limited distribution and do not occur anywhere else (except Fuerteventura).
