The Barfüßer Monastery was an extensive and important complex for the history of Nordhausen. The Franciscan monastery in Nordhausen already had a church before 1234, which burned down that year. Her successor, about whom little is known, must have been one of the city's greatest; it was consecrated in 1278. The monastery's buildings were demolished, the last of which was the church in 1805. The ruins of a small rectangular side extension with a Gothic entrance have been preserved. There was a cemetery around this building, which was mentioned as existing in 1874, but is no longer documented. The gatehouse, built in 1667, was the entrance to the cemetery. The name of the church and cemetery goes back to the custom, introduced in 1329, of distributing a donation to the poor every year to commemorate a victorious feud between citizens and feudal lords. The Barfüssertor was named after the monastery.
