Mamertinum, also known as the Mamertine Prison, was the state prison of ancient Rome, where many of Rome's enemies were held and executed. According to tradition, the apostles Peter and Paul were also imprisoned here, shortly before they were martyred.

Mamertinum consisted of two cells, one above the other, the Carcer (top) and the Tullianum (bottom), which were connected by a hole in the ceiling. The Tullianum was the oldest part and was probably built in the 3rd century BC. built. The prison was not intended for long-term confinement, most prisoners were held for short periods of time. Others, however, were sentenced to death and were imprisoned and executed here. This often happened by strangulation, in other cases the prisoners were starved to death. The most famous victims were the Gallic king Vercingetorix and Jugurtha, the king of Numidia.
