The name "Legge" comes from the fact that linen trade was operated here at the time, where the linen was "laid out" for measurement.

"The Torhaus Legge was built in 1577 as a gateway to the newly created Schlossstrasse. It was established by Count Mauritz as the first state-owned linen testing institute in Westphalia and used from 1654 to 1843 to promote linen production on house looms and the linen trade in the County of Teck¬lenburg . The linen produced on the house looms in the Tecklenburger Land, which was to be sold, was laid out on the 7 m long laying table for measuring and quality testing (Low German: leggen). The prescribed quality control ultimately established the extraordinarily good reputation of Tecklenburger linen. " Source: tecklenburg-touristik.de
