In an extraordinary panoramic position above Lake Bolsena, Grotte di Castro has ancient Etruscan roots. Founded in the 7th century BC, the settlement maintained a certain importance until the 3rd century BC, when it became part of the dominions of Rome.

Nearby is the suggestive necropolis of Pianezze. In the heart of the historic centre, in the building that once housed the mayor, there is the archaeological and popular tradition museum, which displays a notable collection of Etruscan finds.

The sanctuary of Santa Maria del Suffragio, in baroque style, stands above an 8th century parish church and houses precious wooden inlays and the wooden statue of the Madonna del Suffragio, venerated as miraculous.
