Purchased by Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy in 1564, following the transfer of the capital of the Savoy duchy to Turin after the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, the Valentino Castle owes its name to the geomorphological characteristics of the region, already called «Vallantinum» in documents of the 17th century because the territory is not flat and uniform. The Valentino castle was built starting from the 16th century as a suburban residence of "delight". The residence, which became the property of the House of Savoy, was enlarged and enriched with interventions commissioned by Duke Emanuele Filiberto (1528-1580) and his successor Carlo Emanuele I (1562-1630). It now houses the classrooms of the Polytechnic of Turin, Faculty of Architecture.
