Gunung Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Since the 1990s there have been several violent volcanic eruptions with numerous deaths. Areas of land on the southern slopes have been devastated and are no longer habitable.
The area has now been opened for tourist excursions and visitors are driven through the area with its many house ruins in “old” jeeps.
