Monument to Moshoeshoe I and a good vantage point of the Maseru area.

In 1843, Moshoeshoe and the Briton George Thomas Napier signed the Napier Treaty, which confirmed Basotho possession of the western frontier, far west of today's Lesotho border, with only minor land losses. Moshoeshoe was thus recognized as the leader of the Basotho for the first time by the European powers in the region. Moshoeshoe is considered a wise and honest father of the nation and is still revered in Lesotho today. The anniversary of his death, March 11th, is celebrated as Moshoeshoe's Day.
