In 1421 the St. Elisabeth flood ravaged West Brabant. A skipper threatened to sink his ship near Zegge. He promises Mary to build a chapel if he arrives safely. His prayer is answered and he has a Marian chapel built at the place where he stranded. The chapel founded by the skipper no longer exists. Legend has it that a new shrine was later erected on the same spot. The new building had no consequences for the veneration of Mary: pilgrims continued to come in large numbers.
