The polygonal bullring in Almería dates back to 1888. It has 20 outer sides, which are separated by towers with round arches as high as the building. The facade of the arena has three monumental entrance portals, one of which is the main portal above the entrance and is decorated with the head of a bull. The arena was designed by the architects Enrique López Rull and Trinidad Cuartara to accommodate 9,050 spectators on two levels arranged around the circular interior; later renovations increased the possible number of spectators to 9,800. The decision to build the bullring privately was preceded by bullfighting events from 1848 in various places in Almería, but the number of spectators at that time, up to 2,600, proved insufficient. Bullfights are still held in the bullring several times a year.
