The Wimmenummer dunes are located north of Egmond aan Zee; an area with two faces. Close to the village, the dune has been cultivated. Here is a patchwork of dune fields where the villagers grow their vegetables. An age-old tradition that is still very much alive. Further north, the hand of man seems far away. Here is one of the most beautiful stretches of unspoilt dunes in North Holland. You can stroll along narrow seed paths along drifting dune tops and wet valleys. During the breeding season (March 1 to July 1), the central part is closed to the public, but the hiking trails on the western and eastern borders are open all year round.

You could almost call the sea village landscape of the Wimmenummerduinen an open-air museum. For hundreds of years, a large part of the dune area has been used by residents of Egmond aan Zee to grow food. In more than 340 dune lands (also called 'lankies'), people work hard to secure the harvest. The fields surrounded by sand banks vary in size from 140 m² to 1400 m². The result of this age-old tradition is a wonderfully messy landscape in which nature feels surprisingly at home. In the bushes around the hidden fields, nightingales, warblers, hedge sparrows, linnets and blackbirds can be heard. A nice warm-up for the nature reserve behind it.

Because of weeks of rain, the dune gardens looked like a lake landscape. Gardens, paths and cycle paths were often heavily flooded.
