The complex came to life in 1890 as a provincial psychiatric hospital. It consisted of large pavilions for the hospitalization of the sick and for general kitchen, laundry and workshop services as well as clinics and staff quarters.
It soon became one of the most important mental asylums in Italy, covering an area of approximately 140,000 m2 including the part of land intended for an agricultural colony and the beautiful park with large tree-lined avenues. Having completed its hospital function, the area is now involved in one of the most important redevelopment projects for the city.
