First mentioned in 1219, the Katharinenkirche was initially a castle, palace and town church. Its current shape is shaped by the conversion to a late-Gothic hall church (15th century).Particularly noteworthy are the altar from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. from 1518 or the only surviving historical bell from 1482 as well as the "cloth maker's bell" on the main tower.Thomas Müntzer worked here as a preacher from autumn 1520 to April 1521. The statue of Thomas Müntzer and a relief about the Peasants' War by the Berlin sculptor Jürgen Raue from 1989 can be seen in front of the church.
