The lichen was officially described as a new species in 1937 by the Ukrainian lichenologist Alfred Oxner.
Xanthoria calcicola occurs in the southern temperate region of Europe, with its range extending from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. Its presence extends from the UK east to Ukraine and various regions in the Middle East. The lichen grows mainly on stones, but is also often found on bark.
