If the water levels allow, which they mostly will in peak summer/autumn season, then this route is definitely better.
The water often stays ankle deep, reaching only your knees occasionally.
In spring, make sure that you know what the weather is doing as the river could potentially be prone to flash flooding.
The higher route is horrific with much of it overgrown with sharp bushes, landslip that have wiped out some of the trail and some very dodgy, loose and steep narrow paths on pretty treacherous ground - to be avoided if at all possible.
