A lime kiln is a kiln for the production of limestone lime. The process itself is referred to as Kalkbrennen, derived from the job title Kalkbrenner surname derives from this. The importance of lime burning is evident in numerous places called lime kiln and their coat of arms.

The targeted processing of limestone into a versatile building material is one of the oldest and most important technical production processes to date. The oldest evidence of lime production for processing in screed-like floors of cult plants come from the mountain temple of Göbekli Tepe in Anatolia and are 11,000 years old. Already in ancient times the art of lime burning was widespread. As fuel originally wood, peat or coal was used. The first facilities were so-called Meiler, while later simple field ovens were used without walling. Simple earth pits, in which lime was burned in the 20th century, can be found in large numbers in the wooded Bükk Mountains in northeastern Hungary.
