      Forstenberg castle ruins

The founding of the small castle is not documented, but must have taken place in the late 13th century. In any case, the Burgadel appears at the end of the 13th century. in connection with donations to the Pielenhofen monastery. "Chunrat and Ernst di Forstpergär" are mentioned in 1290 as servants of the Hohenfels family, who were themselves influential ministerials of the Bishop of Regensburg.
In 1330, the Forstenbergers moved to Falkenstein Castle, while their ancestral castle fell to Friedrich Hofer von Karlstein, who has called himself "von Vorchtenberg" ever since. As a result, Forstenberg passed through many hands, the list of owners reads like a "Who's Who" of the Upper Palatinate nobility in the late Middle Ages: 1387 the Regensburger Auer, 1393 the Landgrave von Leuchtenberg, who received permission from the Count Palatine to expand the outer bailey. In 1404 the Murachers, in 1460 the Zengers, who acquired the complex together with the nearby Karlstein Castle. Later, further, frequent changes of ownership together with the castle in Karlstein, the castle Forstenberg was probably given up from the 17th century at the latest and fell more and more into disrepair.
The tiny main castle is well protected on a rocky plateau separated by the deep moat. All that remains of it is the stump of the pentagonal keep, to which a building is still visible today. The corner of the tower facing the southern attacking side rests on a brick base. A promontory extends to the east, which was certainly also built on.
