Near where the town of Llansá stands today, was the ancient city of Deciana, founded in the year 218 BC. C., close to the Roman road that forked in Roussillon and crossed the Pyrenees through the mountain passes of La Massana and Portús. After the destruction of Ampurias, at the hands of Hasting and his Normans, in the year 862, the inhabitants of the coasts of Ampurdán, for fear of the incursions of the Saracen pirates, moved from the coast towards the interior, and thus the The town of Llansá was built near the sea, but almost completely hidden.

The old town was organized around the parish church and was delimited by three streets: Dins la Vila, Major and Església. In the port of Llansá there were old fishermen's houses that have been renovated. Currently, this has become a tourist and residential center.

In the 1960s, tourism meant urban and demographic growth that caused the revitalization and transformation of the municipality. The people of the time began to dedicate themselves to new, more attractive and profitable professions: merchants, waiters and builders, among others.

The Arbre de la Llibertat, a large century-old plane tree located in the middle of the Plaza Mayor, is the nerve center of the town. The Freedom Tree of Llançà, in its Plaza Mayor, was planted in 1870 and has a height of almost 25 meters. It is a banana tree of the Platanus hybrida species that offers generous shade to those who sit and have a coffee in this emblematic square in the center of town. The Freedom Trees are monuments that have been installed in towns in a symbolic way since the French Revolution. Until the year 2000, the stone plinth with the town's emblem (three spears) and the inscription 1864 surrounded the Tree of Liberty.
