The Gevangenpoort is a unique medieval gatehouse in the center of The Hague. The museum was once one of the three gateways to the castle of the Counts of Holland, where the Binnenhof is now. From the street you can only see the gate and the courthouse, but behind this there is still an entire prison complex. The Gevangenpoort had cells for the poor, but also for rich political prisoners such as Cornelis de Witt. There is also a collection of penal instruments that are displayed in the various cells and rooms.
