In the heart of the Barão de São João Forest stretches a large expanse of stone pine, perhaps the largest in the Algarve, where the air smells of resin and tranquility. A refuge for wildlife and a paradise for hikers, this forest hosts both the Pedra do Galo trail and the Grande Rota da Via Algarviana, inviting passersby to take leisurely breaks and enjoy picnics in the shade.

The Mata Nacional is a forest area covering several thousand hectares. Here, the original Iberian forest, with its pines, acacias, eucalyptus trees, cork oaks, and strawberry trees, remains intact.

In the 15th century, the forest was used as a source of raw materials for the construction of Portuguese ships. Today, it is a game reserve and recreational area where the native flora and fauna can thrive largely undisturbed.

There are six hiking trails, some of which are also suitable for mountain biking, a picnic area with barbecue facilities, a fitness trail with 14 exercise stations, as well as a public restroom and a children's playground.
