The castle was built in the 11th century. The Lords of Salenstein were first mentioned in 1092 as Ministeriale of the Reichenau Abbey. Like the abbey, they became impoverished in the following centuries and had to sell Salenstein in 1375. The castle went through many hands in the next seven hundred years and was rebuilt and expanded several times. In 1869 it was bought by Baron Alexander von Herder, grandson of Johann Gottfried Herder. He renovated the castle in the style of the English Gothic Revival.

The palace has been owned by Bruno Stefanini's Winterthur Foundation for Art, Culture and History since 1979. This is always criticized in connection with the castle, because it lets it expire.

    Mountain biking

Road is not so sexy for MTB. Better use the surrounding woods!
